The Summer 2016 InteRDom Group visits the Zona Colonial and Colonial Gate 4D CinemaJune 18, 2016
On Saturday, June 18, the Summer 2016 InteRDom group visited the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo led by tourist guide Trikke RD. Trikke is "a new three-wheeled scooter that allows you to have fun, exercise and transport yourself" its creators explain. Its stable platform is combined with an electrical system that allows the user to move in an easy, safe and environmentally-friendly way.
For 90 minutes, the students had the opportunity to get to know historic Santo Domingo through a route that allowed them to see and learn about the most emblematic places and monuments of the Colonial City, the oldest in the Americas. Among the places visited were: El Alcázar de Colón, la Catedral Primada de América, Calle El Conde, la Iglesia del Convento Dominico, among others.
As part of the tour, at the end of the visit, the students were able to visit for the first time the Colonial Gate 4D Cinema, a
private initiative which began with the aim of "creating a new space as a cultural and educational tourist attraction, " as describes the founding group composed of creative entrepreneurs. They were able to relive and enjoy the short film about the invasion by the pirate Francis Drake to the Walled City of Santo Domingo in 1586, as well as an intense ride along the Great Wall of China.
Students were fascinated with the visit as they had the opportunity
to learn the history behind many important monuments. One of the exchange students, Katheryn Maldonado, from the University of Connecticut, describes that "the use of Trikke makes for a dynamic and unique tour". Also, she notes that she liked the twist that it put the classic historical tours. And finally she said she "recommends the tour to anyone interested in learning about the history of the Dominican Republic."
This tour is part of
the extensive program of cultural activities that is prepared for each group of exchange students. Besides this activity, students will have the opportunity to visit Bahia de las Águilas in the province of Pedernales, ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, attend the Long Night of the Museums in the Colonial Zone, and many more activities that will allow them to
experience the Dominican culture and enjoy of its charms.
InteRDom, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain
professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
