The Universities UNAPEC, UNIBE and UNPHU Celebrate World Environment Day Alongside DREFF with a Diverse Lineup of Documentaries

UNAPEC, UNIBE and UNPHU, institutions of higher learning in the DR, will celebrate World Environment Day this week alongside GFDD/Funglode’s Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) and its Year-Round Environmental Film Screenings program with a diverse list of documentary screenings and debates about sustainable development and good environmental practices.

Within APEC university’s Environment Week program, this year
under the slogan “Cuatrienio de las aguas” (Four Years of Water), screenings at the institution will take place from Tuesday, June 6 to Friday, June 9 with four documentaries: La Casa Ausente, Freightened, Blood Lions and All the Time in the World.

Meanwhile, Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE), which is dedicating its Environment Week to the botanist Ricardo Guarionex García, screened In Defense of Food on June 5 and will screen the 2015 Globo Verde Dominicano Award-winning short-film 7 gramos on the morning of June 12.

The Universidad Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) will present The Song of the Humpback today, Thursday, June 8.

“During June, World Environment Day and World Oceans Day are celebrated on the 5th and 8th, respectively, dates which promote good environmental practices and the sustainable use of natural resources,” explained Omar Shamir Reynoso, GFDD Environmental Programs coordinator in the Dominican Republic. “Thus, we are united with the world initiatives and also with the international effort of the first Ocean Conference organized by the United nations and
celebrated in New York this week.”

Year Round Environmental Film Screenings offer the opportunity to educational and community centers, and businesses, governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations to enjoy the most interesting environmental screenings that have been presented in previous editions of DREFF for free.
