Yo Soy la Salsa Encore Screening Success at Dominican Embassy!

December 8, 2015

Dominican students and personnel from the Dominican Embassy and Consulate in Washington, DC enjoyed the film that was part of the last edition of DFS.

GFDD, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States, screened Yo Soy la Salsa on December 8th. The film, which was successfully screened at the second day of the GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase on November 20th, had an encore showing at the
Embassy in DC. The documentary follows the beginnings of the salsa music genre and includes interviews with music legend Johnny Pacheco and other influential individuals. Salsa became a cultural movement that emerged at a time where strengthening Latin culture was greatly needed, and still gets people out onto the dance floor even 50 years later.

The documentary
Yo Soy la Salsa, directed by Manuel Villalona and produced by Andrés Van der Horst, is an homage to the maestro of Salsa, as told through his own testimonies as well as his friends and colleagues, including Rubén Blades, Ismael Miranda, Isidro Infante, Eddie Montalvo, Marc Anthony, Oscar de León, and Milly Quezada.

About the DFS:
The presence of the vibrant and dynamic Dominican community is well acknowledged in cities across the United
States. Dominican culture, music, and traditions are quickly becoming household references but the country’s film industry remains relatively unknown. Global Foundation for Democracy and Development aims to change that by showcasing a sample of the best films produced recently in the Dominican Republic, by Dominican filmmakers, about Dominican topics. To do this, GFDD is partnering with the Organization of American States, the Art Museum of the Americas, the Dominican Embassy in
the US, and the Dominican Mission to the Organization of American States.
