City College and InteRDom Partner Expand Summer Service-Learning Program

January 30, 2012

InteRDom Internships in the Dominican Republic and the Study Abroad Department of the City College of New York are excited to announce the continuation in the summer 2012 of the Caribbean culture & service-learning program successfully launched by the two entities in 2011.

Applications are now open for students to participate in the 4-week program from June 9th – July 7th, 2012, which features a 15-hour seminar on Caribbean culture and
identity and a number of cultural and social excursions to complement the seminar both within Santo Domingo and in other parts of the country.

The feature of this 4-credit program, as in 2011, is the service-learning externship project, which will be focused in 2012 on urban farming.  Students will work together with a host community organization to establish a community training center for teaching and creating urban farming opportunities. Each
student will have a specific role in relation to the project that will complement their academic and career objectives.

Summer 2011 participant and City College student Eddie Cuesta was particularly pleased with the tailoring of his role in the program to his specific interests.
“I have gained much from my participation in the InteRDom internship program,” he said, “and found it to be rewarding. This program was
tailor-made for me.”
Students interested in participating in the program are encouraged to attend an information session with InteRDom and Study Abroad representatives in the City College Study Abroad office on Thursday, February 16th from 12:30 – 2 p.m.  At the information session students will learn more about the itinerary, cost and program logistics, as well as how to begin the apply to participate.

Students are encouraged to
begin the application process early in order to ensure their participation and access to scholarship and financial aid opportunities through City College and the Study Abroad office.  The application is downloadable on the InteRDom website, and can also be obtained in hard copy from the City College Study Abroad Office.

With this special collaboration with City College, InteRDom aims to set a precedent for other universities work with InteRDom to design creative
programs that serve their unique student bodies.  InteRDom is interested in offering opportunities abroad to increasingly diverse students with broad and varied academic and professional interests.

The internship program, InteRDom, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
