Promoting Dominican Culture at the Catholic University of America (CUA)
Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Washington, D.C. will be representing the Dominican Republic at the Catholic University of America (CUA)’s annual Open House & Embassy Exhibit during their International Week.

Leonel Fernández Will Be Part of the Leadership Council of a UN Agency
The former President of the Dominican Republic and President of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), Leonel Fernández, has been invited to join the Leadership Council overseeing the work of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), an initiative designed by the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) to assist in solving global problems.

The Documentary Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience Can Be Seen Online on GFDD’s Channel
Following their goal of raising awareness and deepening the understanding of environmental issues among Dominican audiences, GFDD and the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) are making the film available to the public worldly, free of charge.

UNA-DR and GFDD/Funglode Announce the Model United Nations in New York
The organizing institutions are inviting Dominican schools, universities and students to participate in the tenth edition of the conference, which will be held in the Hall of the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN).

Under the direction of Felipe Rojas Alou at the Montreal Expos, the Dominican pitcher Pedro Martínez vaulted to stardom, winning the first of his three Cy Young Awards.

The ReCrearte Program Reaches Over 2,000 Dominicans in 2014
The ReCrearte program, an initiative of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), far surpassed the 30 workshops it had set as a goal in early 2014, and , thus, has benefitted more than 2,000 people in the Dominican Republic. A total of 85 workshops, which involved members from all walks of life and empowered the most marginalized groups of society, took place in 60 neighborhoods and communities across the country.

GFDD/Funglode Signed a Historic Agreement for Dominican Cinema with the New York Film Academy
Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), its sister institution in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode), and the prestigious New York Film Academy (NYFA) signed an agreement today under which Dominican film students pursuing academic film programs in the United States will receive a 25% tuition fees discount and will also have the possibility of taking courses in the Dominican Republic. The president of GFDD/Funglode and former
president of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Leonel Fernández, signed the agreement today in New York City, together with the president of NYFA, Michael Young, at the Manhattan offices of the film school. The agreement represents a milestone in the history of the Dominican film industry.

Green Film Network Welcomes DREFF as a New Member
The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) ushered in the new year by joining the Green Film Network (GFN), the prestigious international association of environmental film festivals. Through its network of major festivals, the GFN promotes global awareness of environmental and sustainable development issues by coordinating the events of its member festivals, by promoting and distributing films worldwide, and by encouraging cooperative initiatives and projects. In its
homepage the association welcomes DREFF and explains its mission, vision and objectives. Its website also hosts a dedicated link to the Dominican festival.

InteRDom and University of Rhode Island’s Fifth Annual Winter Nursing Program Begins
The InteRDom program is excited to host a new group of University of Rhode Island (URI) students for the fifth consecutive winter nursing program from January 4 – 16, 2015. During their two weeks in the country, students will perform service learning activities and explore cultural, professional, and social elements of Dominican society.

GFDD Granted Observer Status with UNCTAD to Advise on International Trade and Development Issues
The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) has received official confirmation from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) that it has been awarded official observer status. The implications of this decision for GFDD are that the foundation will from now on be able to be represented and to participate in the Trade and Development Board meetings in the public intergovernmental meetings organized by UNCTAD.
