ANU-RD Executive Director Elected to Board of World Federation of UN Associations
The United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNADR or ANU-RD by its Spanish acronym), a close collaborator of GFDD, was pleased to participate in the 41st General Assembly of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). The meeting, which is held every three years, took place this year in Vancouver on November 20 to 22.

La Montaña Comes to the Dominican Navy’s 27 de Febrero Naval Base
This event, held as part of the DREFF Environmental Film Screenings series, was arranged especially for cadets, candidates, and recruits of the Dominican Navy and included the participation of Commander General Vice Admiral Edmundo Felix Pimentel and the president of the Association of Navy Officers’ Wives of the Dominican Republic (ADEOARD), María Orietta García de Félix.

Pedro Urrutia’s First Film Código Paz Closes Dominican Film Showcase in D.C. with Great Success
The audience lauded the first Dominican-made action film and was also delighted by the presence of the young director at the Art Museum of the Americas. Código Paz has been a great success in the Dominican Republic and is now enjoying worldwide attention. It is the first Dominican film, made under the Film Law, to open simultaneously in all theaters around the country to record audiences and to be showing for a record 19 consecutive weeks in local theaters.

The Dominican Film Showcase in D.C. Pays Homage to Musician Johnny Pacheco with “Yo Soy la Salsa”
The second day of the GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase came with an abundance of rhythm provided by Latin music legend Johnny Pacheco. The documentary “Yo Soy la Salsa,” directed by Manuel Villalona and produced by Andrés Van der Horst, is an homage to the maestro of Salsa, as told through his own testimonies as well as his friends and colleagues, including Rubén Blades, Ismael Miranda, Isidro Infante, Eddie Montalvo, Marc Anthony, Oscar de León and Milly
Quezada.

Leonel Fernández Named Professor Honoris Causa by Ecuador’s Technical University of Loja
Last Friday, November 20, GFDD/Funglode president Dr. Leonel Fernández was named Professor Honoris Causa of the Technical University of Loja (Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja–UTPL), a higher education institution based in this south Ecuadorian city.

Night of Laughs with “Los paracaidistas” and Cheddy García at the Opening of the Dominican Film Showcase in D.C.
This year the Dominican Film Showcase in Washington, DC could not have had a better opening night. A hundred minutes of pure laughter followed by a pleasant conversation with one of the most famous Dominican comedians and a cocktail reception for new and old friends of the GFDD. The film was “Los paracaidistas,” directed by Archie López, starring the charismatic, award-winning actress Cheddy García, straight from the Dominican Republic for the occasion.

Leonel Fernández Takes Office as New President of EU-LAC Foundation
GFDD/Funglode president Dr. Leonel Fernández took office as the new president of the European Union–Latin America and Caribbean (EU-LAC) Foundation last week, a position to which he was elected this past August by the 33 countries that make up the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

Inspired by the films screened during the 4th and 5th Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), a group of young people have decided to raise awareness on the importance of sharks for preserving biodiversity through a new softball team: the Las Galeras Sharks.
