GFDD/Funglode organized and moderated a panel discussion at the 2016 United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA USA) Leadership Council today, in its capacity as the Chair of the UNA USA Council of Organizations (UNA USA COO) Environmental Subcommittee. The event, entitled Beyond the Road to Paris-Action for Climate Change, was a seminar and panel discussion on climate change led by Marc Jourdan of the Global Foundation for Democracy and
Development (GFDD). With the participation of international science and policy experts, it sought to inform UNA USA chapter members about the regional impacts of climate change, both in the US and the Dominican Republic, and the efforts made in Paris by the international community to help tackle this global issue.

“Civil Society is the engine for democratic change in the region” States Almagro
As part to of the 46th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, OAS Secretary General, emphasized the role of civil society in promoting democratic change and real solutions to the problems and challenges facing member states in the region. GFDD and Funglode, along with 70 other organizations, participated in a forum on democracy and sustainable development at the assembly, being held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

“The UN’s Science Technology and Innovation Forum must be a vehicle for inclusion” States UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon at the 1st Session of the STI Forum
GFDD was present during the first annual Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI Forum) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which took place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from Monday June 7 to Tuesday June 8. During the conference, representatives of UN Member States and Major Groups and Other Stakeholders heard presentations from panelists and engaged in an interactive dialogue with several eminent keynote speakers including
scientists, technologists and innovators. They presented disruptive changes in science, technology and innovations that are crucial for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During this session, Despotovic and Weisbrot discussed the findings of Weisbrot’s latest book Failed: What the “Experts” Got Wrong About the Global Economy, in addition to an engaged debate about the long term economic failures and changes that have taken place in the last couple of decades and how these have impacted Latin America.

Strengthening the Power of Film Festivals Networks: DREFF at the 2016 FINCA
The Multimedia DeHumALC Institute (IMD) of Argentina, in the framework of the International Environmental Film Festival FINCA, organized last Friday in Buenos Aires the meeting “The Power of Film Festivals Networks” during the launch of the publication “How to organize a film festival with a social commitment, a handbook for human rights and environmental cinematographic events” which is available online for download. The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF)
participated to recount its six years of experience organizing the only event of its kind in the region.

The Ibero-American Network of Young Leaders Meets in the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo will host, from July 5 to 7, the annual meeting of the Ibero-American Network of Young Leaders (RIJL, for its acronym in Spanish), a nonpartisan and nonprofit association integrated by more than 150 young people from 22 Ibero-American countries who stand out for their leadership, academic career and social commitment. RIJL 2016 summit is supported by GFDD / Funglode, Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, the Carolina Foundation and Microsoft, among other
organizations.
