DREFF and Centro León Celebrate World Environment Day with Cinema and Discussions on Sustainable Development
The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), through its program Year Round Environmental Film Screenings, commemorated yesterday in collaboration with Centro Leon in Santiago de los Caballeros the World Environment Day. To celebrate this important day two short films were screened: Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience, a Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) production winner of numerous international awards; and
7 Grams, winner of Premio Globo Verde Dominicano 2015.

Leonel Fernández: Global Crisis Continues to Buffet Latin America’s Economies
This Thursday President of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) Dr. Leonel Fernández stated that the global economic crisis continues to negatively impact the economies of most Latin American and Caribbean countries, causing a significant reduction in investment, job growth, and state revenues.

Deadline for Submissions for Premio Globo Verde Junior Extended until July 31: Don’t Miss Your Chance!
The Globo Verde Junior category of DREFF’s Globo Verde Dominicano Award has extended the registration deadline until July 31, the same deadline for the other three categories : Short Film, Public Service Announcements and Photography. The Globo Verde Dominicano Award, the first contest of audiovisual in the environmental area in the Dominican Republic, created the Junior category last year with the aim of promoting interest in environmental film among young people and encourage their
training in new technologies.

“If Seas Continue to Rise as Projected the Maldives Will Be Unlivable by 2100”, States Jon Bowermaster during GFDD/Funglode Special Presentation of Sink or Swim: Learning the Crawl in the Maldives
Seeking to educate New York City high school students about the impacts of climate change and incentivize them into action, GFDD/Funglode put together a special film screening and panel discussion at the United Nations today for students from the International School of Liberal Arts based in the Bronx and the High School for Excellence and Innovation based in Inwood. The film being screened was the environmental documentary Sink or Swim: Learning the Crawl in the Maldives
directed by Jon Bowermaster, which was followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker and the Ambassador of Fiji to the United Nations, H.E Mr. Peter Thomson. The event also included a guided tour of the UN, to provide students with the opportunity to learn more about the international organization.

DREFF and Eco-Escuelas Take Environmental Documentaries to Academic Institutions
The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) and its program of Environmental Film Screenings – both GFDD initiative – supports the mission of IDADR program Eco-Schools, a project of international environmental certification awarded to schools that develop programs and projects for education and participation, where the children and friends of the school are involved in the implementation of environmental improvements in the institution and the community. For this
purpose, Environmental Film Screenings program presented the documentaries The Change, Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience, and Plastic Paradise in two academic institutions, on May 12.

Students from Liceo Científico Dr. Canela Lázaro Get Ready to Escalate Pico Duarte with the Documentary La Montaña
GFDD/Funglode and DREFF, through their program Year Round Environmental Film Screenings, presented on May 13 a special screening of the documentary La Montaña, which was attended by 60 students enrolled in their last year of studies at Liceo Científico Dr. Canela Lázaro, in the Hermanas Mirabal Province.
