DREFF Present at 16th Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival in Toronto
The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), a GFDD initiative, was represented last night at the opening of the Planet in Focus Film Festival, which takes place in Toronto until Sunday, October 25th. The festival is Canada’s leading environmental film festival, and the first of its kind in the world. This year marks its 16th anniversary, and boasts a full schedule of film screenings and events for the industry, as well as activities aimed at primary and secondary
school students.

Over One Thousand Students Participate in Conferencia Internacional de las Américas 2015
The Dominican Association of the United Nations (UNA-DR), an initiative of the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) and the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), opened on Thursday October 22nd with the parade of flags of the heads of Delegation and Delegate Judges, simulating the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the Conferencia Internacional de las Américas (CILA 2015).

The Dominican Production Código Paz to be Screened in NYC as Part of the Dominican Film Showcase Program
The upcoming Dominican Film Showcase (DFS) will feature a screening of Código Paz on Friday, November 6th, 2015 at 6 p.m. at the Symphony Space on Broadway in New York. Código Paz,an action film by Pedro Urrutia, follows Pedro Ruiz, a Dominican real estate broker by day and a savvy but out-of-luck thief by night. Desperate to look for respect climbing the money ladder the easy way, he finds himself in the wrong mansion at the wrong time. The
screening will be followed by a Q&A session for the audience with Héctor Aníbal, one of the film’s key actors.

Lo Dominicano | All Things Dominican Now Available for Sale Online
Lo Dominicano | All Things Dominican, which was launched in September as part of the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), explores the multi-faceted lives of those who live in the Dominican Republic. The GFDD publication, in a bilingual Spanish-English version, is designed to present the main aspects of what it means to be Dominican as well as the natural resources and the culture of the country, from a modern and innovative
point of view, in an easy to read manner, with emphasis on interesting and not widely-known facts.

Yuan Li: “Chinese influence in the Dominican Republic is significant”
Under the series “Research and Ideas”, GFDD launched the book “Dominican Republic and P.R. China: Exchange, Trade, and Investment”, in which researcher Yuan Li demonstrates through data and analysis the extent of Chinese economic influence in the Dominican Republic, including trade relationships, economic activity of the Chinese diaspora in the country, foreign direct investment, and policy recommendations to maximize the benefits of these relationships. The event was held at GFDD
Washington DC’s office and started with the presentation of GFDD’s institutional video.

UAPA University Students Learn About Pressing Problems Causing Climate Change
Last Wednesday, October 14, students and staff of the University for Adults (Universidad Abierta Para Adultos –UAPA) participated in a screening of the documentary Lago Enriquillo: Prelude to Climate Change, held at the National Aquarium. The event was part of the programming of the Year-round Environmental Film Screening Series run by GFDD/Funglode as a sub-initiative of the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival.

Warm Welcome for Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience at 18th United Nations Association Film Festival (UNAFF)
The audience at the 18th United Nations Association Film Festival (UNAFF) learned about recycling and ways to use garbage as a raw material to create art and new products and a source of income. The GFDD film, “Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience” was chosen to be screened at the festival held in California October 15-25 and was received yesterday with a very warm welcome.
