Promoting Dominican Culture at the Passport DC
GFDD and Funglode will be again be partnering with the Embassy of the Dominican Republic to participate in the annual Passport D.C.- Around the World Embassy Tour program on May 2, 2015. The Embassy of the Dominican Republic will open their doors to thousands of D.C. visitors and residents for this event. As in previous years, GFDD and Funglode will present their many programs promoting sustainability and the environment,technology, education, cultural
heritage, and internships and scholarships.

Fellows Program Announces Partnership with University of Rhode Island for Coastal Resources Master’s Fellowship
The Fellows Program, an initiative of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), together with the Department of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island (URI) are excited to announce a new partnership to offer one master’s student per year in the Coastal Resources department a fellowship covering a master’s degree at URI with field research in the Dominican Republic. This fellowship is slated to begin in the Fall of 2015.

Meet Megan Beddow, GFDD/FUNGLODE Fellow Researching Nonprofit Management in the Dominican Republic
The Fellows Program, an initiative of GFDD and FUNGLODE, is excited to introduce its newest scholar, Megan Beddow, dual master’s candidate in Public Affairs and Arts at Indiana University. Megan’s research focuses on nonprofit partnerships and institutionality in the Dominican Republic, and is slated to begin in June 2015.

DREFF Establishes New Partnership with India’s CMS Vatavaran Environment and Wildlife Film Festival
The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), a Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) initiative, signed an agreement with India’s International Environment and Wildlife Film Festival and Forum, CMS Vatavaran. With this agreement, DREFF expands its outreach by partnering with a festival in Asia, reinforcing its mission of developing global networks for the discussion of pressing issues and possible solutions.

GFDD/Funglode Encourages Sustainable Agricultural Techniques at Geography Week in Santo Domingo
Under the slogan The Future of Food: Feeding the World and Taking Care of the Planet the IV Geography Week Fair was held on April 21 and 22 at Plaza Sambil mall in Santo Domingo, with the aim of creating awareness in schools, families and society about the importance of caring for our planet to ensure food for future generations.

Dominican Tax System Reform Examined during UN Panel
On Wednesday April 22, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister organization Fundación Global Democracia y Desarollo (Funglode) hosted a panel discussion on tax reform as a trigger for development. The event took place as part of the official launch of the in-house publication entitled “The 2012 Dominican Tax Reform in Historical and Regional Context” by Dr. James Mahon, GFDD Fellow and Woodrow Wilson Professor of Political Science at Williams
College, Massachusetts. Attendees gathered in Conference Room 6 of the General Assembly Building for a presentation of Dr. Mahon’s work during which he commented on the disappointing effects of the 2012 reform, despite extraordinarily favorable political conditions at its initiation.

“We need everyday people to be involved in sustainable development,” Says Glenn Denning
Glenn Denning, director of the New York office of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), said the goals of sustainable development cannot be just a document, that they have to be more than a call to action. “There must be a way for them to be implemented and for that, financing is necessary,” he said.
