The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) was pleased to welcome Director of the Department of Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO) at the Organization of American States (OAS), Gerardo de Icaza, for the September edition of the Global Roundtables series. On September 4 Semiramis de Miranda, GFDD Projects and ICT Director, and diplomat and GFDD contributor Angie Martinez received de Icaza at the GFDD offices in Washington, DC.

In the most recent edition of the GFDD Global Roundtables, Maria Victoria Abreu, GFDD’s International Affairs and Socio-Economic Development Program Manager, interviews Luis Almagro Lemes, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), at the GFDD offices in Washington, DC. Among many other topics, the two spoke about the role of the OAS in the regional democratic processes including the electoral observation missions, the new institutional challenges for the OAS,
and the upcoming General Assembly to be held in the Nation’s capital in June 2018.

Leonel Fernández Will Head OAS Electoral Observer Mission to Mexico
The Former President of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Leonel Fernández, will lead the Mission of Foreign Visitors that will observe the federal and local elections that are scheduled to take place in Mexico on July 1, 2018.

GFDD Interviews Ambassador Diego Pary Rodríguez for Final Global Roundtable of 2017
For GFDD’s fourth and final Global Roundtable of 2017, the Foundation obtained valuable insight from H.E. Diego Pary Rodríguez, Bolivia’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS). Topics such as the importance of inclusion of indigenous peoples in political society, Bolivia’s Law of the Rights of Mother Earth, the role of international organizations in guaranteeing common interests and norms, and lawful production of coca leaves were
discussed.

GFDD Global Roundtable: Interview with Ecuador’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States, Ambassador Marco Albuja
To mark the latest edition of the GFDD Global Roundtables, Angie Martinez, diplomat and contributor to the Foundation, hosted Ambassador Marco Albuja, Ecuador’s permanent representative to the Organization of American States (OAS). The session which took place in the Washington D.C. office of GFDD focused on a number of issues including the financial crisis, the movement of labor to the US, the civic revolution initiated by the former President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa,
environmental governance reforms, peace and security and the recent election of President Lenín Moreno.

GFDD and OAS Renew Agreement to Strengthen Democracy in the Americas
“More than a decade after signing this agreement, renewing it today means that our commitment to those values and principles that will make the entire region of Latin America and the Western Hemisphere a region where there can be peaceful coexistence and democratic relationship between our peoples is even greater,” added Fernández. Meanwhile, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro said that the objective of the agreement is “to advance the path of bringing the OAS closer to civil society
organizations that contribute to the strengthening of the region””s democracies.”

As an Engaged Civil Society Organization, GFDD/Funglode Joins Hemispheric Efforts Towards Human Rights, Rule of Law, and Democracy
As a civil society organization registered to the Organization of American States (OAS), GFDD-Funglode participated at the 47th General Assembly, celebrated June 19-21, 2017 in Cancún, México. The Foundation has attended this annual event in the past as part of its institutional mission to foster collaboration and exchange between the Dominican Republic and the Western Hemisphere.

50 Dominican Leaders Visit the GFDD Offices in Washington DC to Discuss the Environment and Sustainable Development
A group of 50 Dominican leaders participated in an event organized by the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) as part of the Dominican Embassy in the United States’ Leaders Program in Washington, DC. The group participated in a screening of the GFDD award-winning film, “Value of Life” and in a subsequent discussion about the environment, sustainable development and environmental film.

The secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and the president of GFDD/Funglode, Leonel Fernández, held a work meeting on Tuesday morning in which they analyzed the most pressing challenges currently facing Latin America and the Caribbean, such as organized crime and citizen insecurity.
