  • Yo Soy la Salsa Encore Screening Success at Dominican Embassy!

    GFDD, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States, screened Yo Soy la Salsa on December 8th. The film, which was successfully screened at the second day of the GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase on November 20th, had an encore showing at the Embassy in DC. The documentary follows the beginnings of the salsa music genre and includes interviews with music legend Johnny Pacheco and other influential individuals. Salsa became a cultural
    movement that emerged at a time where strengthening Latin culture was greatly needed, and still gets people out onto the dance floor even 50 years later.

  • Pedro Urrutia’s First Film Código Paz Closes Dominican Film Showcase in D.C. with Great Success

    The audience lauded the first Dominican-made action film and was also delighted by the presence of the young director at the Art Museum of the Americas. Código Paz has been a great success in the Dominican Republic and is now enjoying worldwide attention. It is the first Dominican film, made under the Film Law, to open simultaneously in all theaters around the country to record audiences and to be showing for a record 19 consecutive weeks in local theaters.

  • The Dominican Film Showcase in D.C. Pays Homage to Musician Johnny Pacheco with “Yo Soy la Salsa”

    The second day of the GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase came with an abundance of rhythm provided by Latin music legend Johnny Pacheco. The documentary “Yo Soy la Salsa,” directed by Manuel Villalona and produced by Andrés Van der Horst, is an homage to the maestro of Salsa, as told through his own testimonies as well as his friends and colleagues, including Rubén Blades, Ismael Miranda, Isidro Infante, Eddie Montalvo, Marc Anthony, Oscar de León and Milly
    Quezada.

  • New York Welcomes a New Edition of the Dominican Film Showcase with an Exciting Action Film

    The Dominican Film Showcase, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), returned to New York City last night, and it did so with the action film Código Paz, by filmmaker Pedro Urrutia. One of the stars, Héctor Aníbal, traveled from the Dominican Republic to share the evening with the public and the staff of GFDD at the Symphony Space on Broadway in New York.

    In Los paracaidistas, directed by Archie López, a group of friends decide to break the record of going to a hundred parties uninvited…as party crashers. In the process, without realizing it, they risk their jobs, their friendships, and even love. Yo soy la salsa follows the life of Johnny Pacheco, whom we know as one of the great musical legacies responsible for the salsa genre.

  • The Dominican Production Código Paz to be Screened in NYC as Part of the Dominican Film Showcase Program

    The upcoming Dominican Film Showcase (DFS) will feature a screening of Código Paz on Friday, November 6th, 2015 at 6 p.m. at the Symphony Space on Broadway in New York. Código Paz,an action film by Pedro Urrutia, follows Pedro Ruiz, a Dominican real estate broker by day and a savvy but out-of-luck thief by night. Desperate to look for respect climbing the money ladder the easy way, he finds himself in the wrong mansion at the wrong time. The
    screening will be followed by a Q&A session for the audience with Héctor Aníbal, one of the film’s key actors.
