InteRDom Offers URI Students a 360° Experience in Dominican Republic
In the words of Jody Lisbergerer, Associate Professor, Gender and Women’s Studies of the University of Rhode Island (URI), the InteRDom winter program, which concluded this past Friday, was “a superb trip” characterized by the “hard work and marvelous stewardship of the organizers”. This year’s participants in the InteRDom winter program were 8 political sciences students from URI, who started their journey on January 4th 2016.

GFDD Appointed Chair of UNA USA Sub-committee Promoting Sustainable Environmental Ecosystems
The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), represented by its UN Programs & Outreach Manager, Marc Jourdan, was today appointed Chair of a new sub-committee by the United Nations Association of the United States (UNA USA) Council of Organizations entitled “Support and Promote a Sustainable Environmental Ecosystem.”

Dominican Schools Prepare for “Semana de la Geografía”
A workshop will be hosted on January 19th 2016, at the GFDD/Funglode headquarters, as part of a series of activities preceding the “Semana de la Geografía” (Geography Week), where directors of both public and private educational institutions, natural and social sciences professors, and technicians from the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic will receive both technical and academic training. The workshop aims at empowering, motivating, and providing the participants with
the necessary tools to better convey to students the content of the information discussed.

It’s estimated that there are currently 1.8 million people of Dominican origin residing in the United States, according to an analysis from the Pew Research Center, a social research fact tank. This analysis considers Dominicans to be those born in the Dominican Republic and classed as immigrants in the United States, or those born on U.S. soil to parents of Dominican origin.

InteRDom Hosts University of Rhode Island Students in Dominican Republic for Winter Program
The InteRDom program began its winter session with a political science group from the University of Rhode Island (URI) today. Students arrived this morning and had an orientation session of the program, which runs from January 4 – 15 in the Dominican Republic. The group this year consists of eight students and one professor.

The agreement made by the Political Committee, with the aim of amending the constitution to permit presidential reelection, had resolved that all senators and deputies would be renominated for their offices; that mayors would only need a showing in the polls of a difference of at least 10 percentage points over their internal rivals; and that Council members would be the only ones to remain subject to the decisions of the voters.

Yo Soy la Salsa Encore Screening Success at Dominican Embassy!
GFDD, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States, screened Yo Soy la Salsa on December 8th. The film, which was successfully screened at the second day of the GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase on November 20th, had an encore showing at the Embassy in DC. The documentary follows the beginnings of the salsa music genre and includes interviews with music legend Johnny Pacheco and other influential individuals. Salsa became a cultural
movement that emerged at a time where strengthening Latin culture was greatly needed, and still gets people out onto the dance floor even 50 years later.
